According to the recently passed stimulus bill, the government is going to reimburse doctors $44,000-$64,000 over five years beginning in 2011 for those practices that have been meaningfully using EMR for six to nine months. Using EMR allows physicians to eliminate nearly all paperwork associated with patient care, replacing it with computerized records.

The incentive to switch to EMR is the carrot being offered the medical profession in the hope that one day in the near future all medical records will be electronic. There are three ways to become eligible. Firstly, you can invest in the hardware and software (not to mention training) on your own.
